‘IT LOOKS LIKE UP’ N.H. PRISON COLLEGE HELPS FREE THE MINDS OF INMATE STUDENTS PROGRAM SEEKS TO CUT RETURN RATE:
DATELINE CONCORD (Boston Globe April 9, 1989 Bob Hohler) – Dan Gelinas, college-student-turned-killer, is back in school, huddled with 14 other convicts in a sweltering classroom smack in the center of the New Hampshire state prison.
The course is history and literature of the 1960s, part of a new degree program offered at the prison by New England College. The topic is brinkmanship, and the inmates — convicted murderers, rapists and child molesters among them — are considering a possible link in the personalities of John F. Kennedy, Cool Hand Luke and Randle P. McMurphy, the rebellious hero of “One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest.”
If this obituary is indeed highlighted inmate Mr. Gelinas, then count him a huge success in life…
